Your Check Engine Light Came On - Now What?

Whether your check engine light is yellow or red, solid or flashing, words or a graphic, the "check engine" light is a way your car can communicate with you. Usually, when the check engine light is off, you do not even think about this. When it comes on, though, it is a warning from your engine that something is wrong. So what should you do if your check engine light comes on?

What the light means

 

Luckily, the check engine light doesn’t typically mean you need to pull over right now and get help. This does mean though, that you need to probably get the automobile checked very soon. Depending on the vehicle, your check engine light might "strobe." If your light is strobing, then your engine problem is probably significant and you need to get to a mechanic as soon as possible. Find the check engine error code and read it

 

Most engines have an internal computer that records and stores data about your engine. Many auto parts stores keep code reader computers on hand and available for free or inexpensive use. As the check engine light comes on, you may be tempted to just ignore it. It could be dangerous to ignore this light. Depending on the severity of the problem, you could be seriously damaging your engine. Later repairs could get pricey and fuel efficiency might go down. You should just fix the check engine light problem as the light is an indication of something wrong.
