On The Road To Personal Development: Self-Awareness

Each chapter of our life is meant as a time of personal growth and development. However, many chapters pass without any sense of growth and with us no closer to achieving our goals.

One reason for our lack of growth is that we lack self-awareness. Without self-awareness, we will go around in circles for years trapped in our own internal struggles, unable to break through to a state of mind that will enable us to grow and assertively pursue our goals.

Self-awareness involves knowing yourself and how you react under certain situations. When you are self-aware you recognize your personality traits, strengths and weaknesses, your likes and dislikes, needs and wants plus the motivations behind your actions. Knowing yourself empowers you to improve yourself and pursue your ambitions.

There are several obstacles to being self-aware. Observing others, whether famous or someone we know, causes us to develop inferiority complexes. We do not form a realistic picture of ourselves once we get caught in this pattern of observing others. Additionally, suffering abuse contributes to a lack of awareness by making the victim feel unworthy of love. Victims cannot separate themselves from the abuse, especially if the abuse came at a young age. They make all their decisions in relation to that abuse.

Achieving self-awareness is a long yet rewarding process. There are several ways you can become self-aware.

  • Yoga improves body awareness and self-image, thus reducing eating disorders and building esteem. The practice of yoga may be physical but has deeper rewards. It builds your relationship with your inner self while helping you recognize and develop your physical capabilities.
  •

  • Meditation helps you discover your individuality and identity by focusing your concentration on you. You can become more aware of facets of yourself, such as what causes mood changes, and thus be better equipped to control your mood swings.
  •

  • Record your behaviour and listen to the reviews of trusted friends and family. This way you get to see objectively how you behave and the way it is seen by others.
  •

  • A life coach can be conducive to building self-awareness by helping you focus on your motivations and inspirations.
  •

  • Self-assessment surveys help you understand your skills and what makes you tick, and focus, in some instances, on goals and ambitions.
  •

The information gathered from these methods can be used to realign yourself to your own standards or set new developmental goals or create a new plan.

    Self-awareness has several benefits:

  • Emotional awareness – which helps you trust your own ability to make decisions in your own life.
  • Self-confidence and self-acceptance – you become aware of your own worth, capabilities and purpose.
  • Self-reliance and motivation – you become less dependent on others to validate your efforts and motivate your actions.
  • Stress tester – helps you know how to better handle stressful situations.
  • Leadership – your decision-making and confidence helps you lead and motivate others.
  •

We have shown varied ways and benefits of becoming self-aware. However, on the quest for personal development, avoid the tendency to become complacent at self-awareness. While it is important, self-awareness is just one step on the road to personal development. Be inspired today to take that step, otherwise you face living the rest of your life with the mind of a stranger.
