Personal Style Part 1 – Figuring Out YOU (How I Did It)

Have you looked into your closet and thought, “nothing in here is…me…” If that has happened to you, it is time for you to revamp your personal style. This means that you have to determine what style of clothing suits you and your personality. Your personality changes as you get older and are placed in different settings, and your style should change with it.

First, you have to determine what you like. Sounds simple? But it is not. This ranges from colour to type of clothes – be it dresses, pants, graphic tees, whatever. For me, I was a tomboy while I was going to school. So I used to wear pants, NO skirts whatsoever unless I was going to school or church. Pants, T-shirts and sneakers or slippers. That was my uniform.

But as I got older I decided to get into the “girly thing” and the T-shirts became tighter tees and tanks, then graphic tees, then I started wearing longer earrings and eventually skirts. But I haven’t lost that tomboy edge.

How did I discover my personal style? (and you don’t have to do this; this is just my way) I went online to various websites that sell female clothing. I picked what I liked and put it into a folder. Then, when I racked up a fair amount of clothing in that folder, I looked at them and tried to find trends. I realized that I didn’t have one particular favourite colour, and I loved mixing colours and layering. But the most important thing I realized was that I don’t fit into one particular fashion trend. I am a bit punk and a bit preppy…a bit of everything really!

So open your closet and find the clothes you are no longer so happy about anymore and give them away to friends or to your local charity. And then (and this is my favourite part) go SHOPPING! Once you say “I can see myself in this!” then it’s for you.
