Music Can Kill The Blues

Anytime I am feeling depressed, sad or mad enough to commit a violent act, the only medicine I need is music. After some Anita Baker, Babyface and Prince, I am my serene self again.

I am not the only one who is so powerfully influenced by music. Studies over the years have proven that different styles of music can influence the mood in a variety of ways. For example, Classical music can uplift your mood while grunge rock can make you increasingly hostile and sad.

A couple listening to music

There are some great effects that music has on mood, such as the following:

  1. Music helps build memory – Studies showed that positive words are remembered when listening to positive music. This is believed to be why one can be optimistic or negative based on the type of music being played as music affects mood and perception.

  2. Music can make you scared – Try to watch the movie Jaws without the background music and I guarantee you it will not be half as terrifying. Music helps build anticipation and without it your brain does not react to certain stimuli in movies or video the same.

  3. Boost your academic performance – Music’s impact on your mood can improve how you do in the classroom. Studies have stated that easy-listening music increased the on-task performance of students. It acts as a motivator while helping the student to analyse and think more efficiently. Easy-listening music can make hard work seem easier.

  4. You shop more – Malls and stores normally play music relevant to their consumers. The music chosen will jazz up the mood of their shoppers, leaving them more relaxed and open to shopping.

  5. Music can reduce stress – By relaxing your muscles and reducing your breathing rate, music reduces your stress levels. Whether you’re working hard at school or your job, this is good to remember since stress has the potential to make you ill and shorten your life.
