Your Friend Is Suicidal - What Do You Do?

I already talked about suicide and how to look for the signs that a person is at risk. Now I’ll talk about what you could do if a friend seems suicidal.

  • Ask the person if they feel suicidal and listen to what they say.
  • Show that you care about your friend and tell them you’ll help them get through this rough patch.

  • Get the person to see a counsellor as soon as possible.

  • If the desire to kill herself is strong, get her to the nearest crisis centre or hospital.

  • Give them the number for your local suicide prevention hotline.

  • Helping suicidal friend

There are some things you should definitely NOT do if you want to avoid alienating your friend or pushing them to make the wrong decision.

  • Don’t ignore the clues that someone is at risk.
  • Don’t laugh it off if someone keeps joking or talking about suicide.

  • Don’t dare someone to kill themselves, because they might go through with it.

  • Don’t be afraid to talk about suicide but don’t ever put down your friend or lecture them.

  • Don’t encourage a suicidal person to deal with their problems with drugs or alcohol because that would only heighten their risk.

  • Don’t play therapist – always seek professional help!
