The Pathway To A Less Stressful Life

Happy, stress-free girl with braids.

Life is full of transitions and adjustments that are accompanied by levels of stress that can overpower all the promise of new opportunities. The workload of tertiary education may be overwhelming, transitioning out of secondary or high school may be intense, or adjusting to the workforce may be more restrictive than you had hoped. Stress has a way of gradually overcoming your life.

It is important to reduce your stress levels which have been proven to be the cause of diseases such as cancer and heart disease. The best time to prevent these diseases is as soon as possible, so let’s identify steps that can be taken to leading a less stressful life.

  • Identify the causes of stress in your life – Make a list of all the stressors in your life that lead you to feel overwhelmed. Maybe you let all the deadlines pile up on you due to constant procrastination; maybe you attempt to take on too much all at once. Sometimes our own actions lead to our high stress levels.
  •

  • Release all unnecessary stress from your life – We all have to live with some level of stress. However, one should avoid stressful situations that are unnecessary for our own personal development. For instance, manage your time more effectively so that you are not doing your assignments the night before they are due, especially if their due dates are close together or the same day. Avoid procrastination as this builds unnecessary pressure and increases your stress level needlessly.
  •

  • Review your current method of coping with stress – Some people overeat, drink, smoke, or even ignore the situation entirely when dealing with stress. These methods only serve to exacerbate the problem.
  •

  • Make time for rest and relaxation – Set aside a time for relaxation each day and fulfill that regardless of your responsibilities. Whether it is a sport, hanging with friends at the beach, or curling up with a good book, take time where your focus is far removed from your responsibilities and stressors. Nothing can replace the benefits of a good night’s rest on your body. The less you sleep, the greater the negative impact of stress on your body.
  •

  • Live a healthy life – Exercise, diet and spiritual replenishment are important factors in living a healthy and balanced life. They are also important ways to reduce stress and its negative effects on your life. They help maintain health and release pent up tensions, and help you to be more relaxed and sleep better at night
  • The pathway to a less stressful life starts with a self-awareness exercise that is meant to propel you to a life where you are free to enjoy new opportunities as they come, and maximize the rewards and excitement associated with each new stage of life. Ultimately, this pathway is essentially a healthier lifestyle. Don’t hesitate to take that first step towards a less stressful life today.
