How To Make Resolutions You Can Keep

I have only one resolution this year. That is to become more comfortable with myself. I normally set unrealistic resolutions and I basically set myself up for failure, disappointment and even more self-loathing. I believe that a resolution should be seen as a strategy for self-improvement; thus, you should have a structured plan for carrying out your resolutions.

She's tired of breaking her resolutions!

She's tired of breaking her resolutions every year!

I have always failed to stand by my resolutions because I have always failed to develop that tactical plan to achieve these resolutions. If you have made resolutions this year, there is no need to fail or miss the mark in achieving these goals. Let me know if you agree with the following suggestions on setting resolutions and keeping them:

  1. Set a goal you can measure – Some goals are not achieved because they are too vague. For example, I will lose weight this year. How much will you lose? How will you lose it? What type of diet or exercise program? When will you start your diet and exercise programme? These are all questions whose answers will help that goal become measurable and achievable.

  2. Don’t try to do too much – Sometimes we try to do too much in one year. We want to lose weight, become a better person, get that dream job, go back to school and on and on. Trying to start all of these at the same time may reduce the chances of achieving any one of them. Instead, prioritise these goals. When the most important one is achieved or you are comfortable in that programme then you can add the next one. The good thing is you don’t have to wait till next year to add these new goals. There is nothing that says you can’t stagger the introduction of your new goals throughout the year.

  3. Have a plan – Write your goals down and develop a detailed plan and timeline for the implementation of these goals. Stick them on the fridge, the computer, your bedroom wall, basically anywhere visible so that you don’t forget the plan.

  4. Have a support system – Get trusted loved ones involved to motivate you, not the ones who will discourage you or mock your goals but those who will give you that good shot in the bum area when you are slacking. Choose the ones who have always supported you and would do all they can to help you achieve your objectives.

The best way to set realistic goals is to separate yourself from the crowd and listen to your inner voice. This way you are motivated because it is what you genuinely want and not what society, your parents or your friends decide is right for you.

Most of all, just stop procrastinating and DO IT!
