Great Ways To Ease Anxiety

It is natural to worry or be a bit anxious about what the future holds. In some circumstances, this may be justified such as when you have an exam you did not study for and you are now worried that you may fail. However, many times we worry about situations we have no control over and then fail to take positive action to advance our goals in life.

Here are some useful steps to overcome the tendency to worry too much:

  1. Meditate – Take time to think about the situation that you are worrying about. Take time to meditate or pray about it. Be honest about your feelings about the situation and determine the reasons that you should not be anxious about it e.g. I have no control over the resolution of the situation. If you meditate and realise that you have some control over the situation, determine what steps you will take to resolve it and follow through with this solution instead of worrying.

  2. Stop putting pressure on yourself – Whether it is family, society or your own expectations that cause you to worry about whether you will live up to these hopes that you may achieve greatness or not, release these expectations and just live your best life. Sometimes these expectations are well-intentioned but the anxiety and stress they put you under can be counter-productive. It will not be easy but you need to lay aside or readjust these expectations for your own health and development.

  3. Take a few risks – Sometimes we get anxious about the consequences of taking risks and let that stop us from doing something that could be great for us. For example, you may worry that if you leave your job to start your own business you could fail and you might allow that anxiety to keep you in a miserable job that does not show the full extent of your potential for years. There are times you need to measure the risks evenly and then simply swallow that anxiety, pride or fear and just do it.

  4. Learn all you can about the situation causing you anxiety – Sometimes we worry due to lack of information. The more you know, you may realise that there really was nothing to worry about.

  5. Stop agonizing about the situation – The more you think about something, the more obsessed you become with it and the less likely you are to stop worrying about it.

None of these steps are easy solutions. You may need to repeat these actions over a period of time or even see a counsellor or other mental health professional but if you could be happier and more at peace, I say it is worth the effort.
