6 Signs I Need To Cancel My Facebook

I love being on Facebook. But this weekend, I took the time to delete all the folks that I have no personal relationship with. By the time I was done, I had deleted two-thirds of my “friend” list. This got me thinking whether I should just cancel my account all-together.

Hooked on Facebook

Therefore, I gave myself a check-list of criteria that once I fit them I would cancel my account. Check yourself against this list and you may also determine that it is about time to get off Facebook.

  1. If you don’t know or communicate with 90% of your “friends” then you may need to get off Facebook and reconnect with your real friends off-line.

  2. Commenting on a post to say “first” – There is nothing more annoying than someone who comments “first” on a fan page. It seems that person has nothing else to do than troll pages to be “first” on. If that is your situation, you need to get offline and find something fulfilling to do.

  3. You've created a separate account for your baby/cat/favourite plant. These are never going to update the profile themselves. You have essentially created work for yourself. Your cat is not like Garfield; people actually get paid to update his Facebook.

  4. You can’t go ten minutes without checking your Facebook timeline. If you are at a restaurant with friends, at the beach, or even at work and you can’t go for ten minutes without whipping out your smart phone to check your timeline – get off Facebook NOW!

  5. You speak to your best friend more often on Facebook than in real life and you live less than an hour away.

  6. You spend money on Sorority Life/Farmville/Mob Wars. If you have to add expenses for getting points for these or other games in your budget, you may just need to take a step back from Facebook.

I saw myself in 2 out of 6 of these points and will re-evaluate my position as it relates to those. However, I don’t think I need to quit Facebook... yet. If you see yourself in 4 or more, you may need to consider backing away from Facebook until you can use it without making it a central part of your life.
