Low Calorie Drinks For Christmas

It is the holiday season and I am so happy because I am looking forward to the gifts and time spent with family and friends. I am also anticipating the food – ham, turkey, lasagne and, best of all, my mom’s great cake. However, many of us avoid all our favourite Christmas foods and alcoholic beverages, which is not necessarily the way to enjoy Christmas healthily. I will show you which drinks have the least amount of calorific content and which don’t and hopefully this will make the season a really jolly AND healthy one.

Know what's safe to drink over the holidays

These are some alcoholic beverages you should avoid for their high calorie and sodium content.

  1. Pina Colado – With a calorie content of 586, this drink bypasses meals from fast food restaurants in calories. They are also pretty empty calories when combined with high sugar from the juice and coconut cream.

  2. Mud Slide – 556 calories makes this drink account for more than one quarter of the suggested calorie per day intake of 2000 for adults. This is all in one drink that carries no additional health benefits.

  3. Long Island Ice Tea – 543 calories the majority of which come from the alcohol in the drink makes this beverage one of the most unhealthy – but a personal favourite - drinks one can consume.

These drinks are less fattening and even have some nutritional benefits.

  1. Gin and Tonic – This is a great drink because even though it has some calories, gin is a known diuretic while tonic is believed to protect against malaria. With the added bonus of the lime one is also exposed to Vitamin C.

  2. Sangria – Low on Carbs, low on fats with vitamins and minerals. Vitamins A, C and B6 among others and amino acids. The calorie count in this drink is around 150 calories. So the ingredients actually work together to add some nutritional value to your alcoholic intake.

  3. Red Wine – This drink is known for its heart healthy qualities and for 12% versions of red wine the calorific content is about 100 calories. That makes it a pretty great drink.

Have great and healthy Christmas!
