Nexcyx's Big Night Out
There were a lot of events happening on the night of 5/28/11. However, the biggest of which, and to be fair the only one you should have even considered going to, was the band Nexcyx’s Concert. The event went down at the Ship Inn in Barbados and was to celebrate the launch of their first EP – “Queen”. The night started off slow, but just as the band was ready to go on, their fans started to flood before the stage.

The concert began theatrically enough, with bass guitarist Kris Clark entering the stage alone and bashing out a sick bass solo to introduce the band. Nexcyx always knows how to work their crowd and there was not a head that didn’t bang when they performed their more hype songs such as the EP named track “Queen” and party anthem “On the Floor”. Heads were bowed as lead singer Mahalia Phillips serenaded the crowd with their ballad that was released for World AIDs Day last year “Take a Minute”.

The band was also joined by spoken word artist Adrian Green of Iron Sharpen Iron for one of the tracks; and former member Rochelle performed her original song “A Million Tears”. Drummer Chad Iffil graced the crowd with his smooth rhythms and rapid beats in a drum solo. Guitarist Russell Padmor rocked out with guitar solos in quite a few songs and Andre Clark on his keyboards contributed every other sound imaginable to complete each and every track as if you were listening to the band straight from the EP. The final track of the night was their debut single “Gossip Girl”, which to this day remains their best track.

Fans of Nexcyx have been begging for this night for a long time, and their continued support showed at the concert as well. And why shouldn’t they? The members of Nexcyx are so personal with their fans that they are more like a family. What was even more refreshing was to see so many faces of fellow artists, such as T-Ray Armstrong and Jamar Harding of Cover Drive, Gigi Ma’at and Vanessa Lee, just to name a very few.

There’s no doubt that this group of young people is one of the best bands on this little rock of Barbados. I’m looking forward to the day these guys will not just fill a club with fans, but a whole stadium!
