Crop Over Throwback 'Carnival'

Crop Over* is almost over in Barbados! And every week Kurama Magazine has been celebrating with a Crop Over Throwback of the week.

This week's throwback is Trinidadian soca superstars Destra and Machel Montano's hit 'Carnival'. Destra Garcia is known for her sweet vocals and vigorous performances. Her greatest achievement to date was winning the Road March title in 2003 at Brooklyn's Labour Day Carnival.

Machel Montano's 25 year long career is noted for his high energy showmanship. He has performed alongside several Caribbean artistes including Pitbull, Alison Hinds, Shaggy, Beenie Man, Sparrow, Denise Balfone and Vybz Kartel, among many others.

I decided to include this song even though it's from Trinidad and Tobago because Barbadians and Trinidadians have a history of sharing each others' carnival music; a popular song in Trinidad will often be a hit in Barbados and vice versa.

*Crop Over: The most anticipated festival in Barbados, which was founded to celebrate the end of the sugar cane harvest. It begins in June and comes to a climax with Grand Kadooment on the first Monday of August. Kadooment is a massive carnival parade with revellers dressed in vibrant, eye-catching costumes. Crop Over comprises of other exciting main events including Bridgetown Market, the calypso competitions Pic-o-de Crop and Party Monarch, and the variety show Cohobblopot.
